Police watchdog probe ex-Villa star’s death

THE Independent Police Complaints Commission were investigating the death on of former Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson last night.
Mr Atkinson died 90 minutes after officers Tasered him in the street where he grew up in the Trench area of Telford, Shropshire.
The 48-year-old had been battling kidney problems and had a weak heart, spending prolonged periods in hospital, according to family and neighbours.
The retired sportsman’s heart stopped while he was in an ambulance on his way to hospital and medics were unable to save him.
A spokeswoman for the police watchdog said that its investigators were at the scene gathering evidence and would be “conducting a full and thorough investigation into all of the circumstances surrounding his death including the use of force.”
Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb said: “Following this tragedy, the government must waste no time in launching a full review of Taser use in the UK. The recent reports of people dying shortly after being Tasered is extremely alarming.”
