SCOTTISH TUC unanimously backed an emergency motion yesterday condemning recent “extreme and violent” persecution of gay men in Chechnya.
STUC LGBT+ workers’ committee member Sally Wilson warned that there had been a “state sponsored hate crime against gay men” in the Russian republic, with over 100 held in concentration camps.
Ms Wilson said the men were “subject to beatings, abuse, and torture and at least four are known to have died.”
She said others had been returned to families “barely alive” where authorities know they could be subject to honour killings by their families.
Reports suggest Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov wants to “eliminate” the gay community by the start of Ramadan on May 26, so “we must act quickly” Ms Wilson said.
She continued: “We cannot simply express our horror and walk away.”
