Police deny forcing Barnsley fans to take down Orgreave banner

Stewards at football match demanded the pro-miner sign be removed

South Yorkshire Police denied yesterday ordering a banner from the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign to be taken down when it was displayed at a football match in Barnsley.

As reported in the Morning Star two weeks ago, Orgreave supporters raised their banner at Barnsley FC’s ground during a match with Nottingham Forest on Saturday March 8.

Stewards ordered the removal of the banner. Campaigners said the stewards claimed to be acting on South Yorkshire police instructions.

But a police spokeswoman said the banner was taken down “at the instigation of the club — not South Yorkshire Police.”

Inspector Neil Mutch, who was the officer in charge at the match, said: “We respect individuals’ right to peaceful protest and, unless people are committing an offence, we will always allow them to raise banners.”

Barnsley Football Club’s media relations office has repeatedly refused to take calls from the Morning Star.
