LEADING Irish Communist Lynda Walker expressed her joy yesterday that Aida Touma-Suleiman, a Palestinian member of Israel’s parliament, will speak at tomorrow’s Feile an Phobail (People’s Festival) in Belfast.
The festival was established by republicans to promote Irish and internationalist culture and the Communist Party of Ireland has organised the Madge Davison memorial lecture as part of the festivities.
“It is most fitting that Aida Touma should speak at the Madge Davison memorial event because, like Madge, Aida has been to the forefront of civil rights struggle in her homeland,” said Ms Walker.
Nazareth-born Ms Touma-Suleiman is a journalist and politician who founded the Arab feminist group Women Against Violence in 1992 and has been its chief executive since then.
After joining the Israeli Communist Party, she became editor of Al-Ittihad, the affiliated Arabic-language newspaper.
The Madge Davison memorial lecture takes place tomorrow at St Mary’s College lecture theatre, Falls Road at 2pm.
