Religious leaders unite to sign Vatican slavery initiative

Faiths unite against modern-day slavery

A MULTI-FAITH group of religious leaders united on Tuesday to sign a new Vatican initiative to end modern-day slavery by 2020.

The clerics declared human trafficking, organ trafficking, forced labour and prostitution to be crimes against humanity.

It commits signatories to do everything in their power to free an estimated 35 million people enslaved across the world.

"In the eyes of God, each human being is a free person, whether girl, boy, woman or man, and is destined to exist for the good of all in equality and fraternity," the declaration read.

Pope Francis has made eliminating modern-day slavery one of the key priorities of his pontificate.

Earlier this year, the Vatican launched the Global Freedom Network to encourage governments, businesses, educational and faith institutions to rid their supply chains of slavery.
