Campaigners take on profiteering franchise holders

RMT takes on cost-cutting as rail minister comes to York

Rail campaigners will protest in York today against planned cuts to jobs and services under new franchises on offer to profiteers.

The new Northern Rail and TransPennine Express franchises include introduction of driver-only trains, ticket office closures and service cuts.

Rail Minister Claire Perry is due in in York with Northern Rail boss Alex Hynes today to visit the city's National Rail Museum.

The city was once a major manufacturing centre for the rail industry.

Rail union RMT will respond with a demonstration at 5.30pm.

The demonstration comes after Sheffield City Council joined other northern councils in condemning the planned cuts.

"The fight to stop the outrageous carve-up of jobs and services under the Northern and TransPennine Express franchise plans is gathering pace by the day," said RMT general secretary Mick Cash.

"Claire Perry will have an ideal opportunity in York to hear about RMT's concerns first-hand."
