UN renews calls for access to Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Syria

Aid workers say Damascus camp 'has no UN food left'

The United Nations has renewed its demand for unimpeded humanitarian access to the besieged Palestinian Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria.

The organisation’s relief agency warned late on Friday that there was no UN food aid left in the Damascus camp and recent fighting had prevented the delivery of desperately needed assistance.

Spokesman Chris Gunness said that the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) had been unable to distribute food aid in Yarmouk, where more than 20,000 civilians depend on UN assistance.

“This is the 10th consecutive day that UNRWA has been unable to distribute food assistance inside Yarmouk.

“Given that an UNRWA food parcel lasts for a maximum of 10 days, from tomorrow there will be no UN food in the camp,” he said.

Prior to the war in Syria, Yarmouk was home to more than 160,000 Palestinian refugees.
