ACCESS to tariff-free trade arrangements with the EU would be prioritised by a Labour government, according to the shadow Cabinet Office minister.
Jon Trickett told BBC1’s Sunday Politics programme: “We’re not going to say that we have to do one thing or other in terms of institutional relationships.
“What we have to have is a Brexit which works for jobs, growth and for the protections which working people have.”
Brexit Secretary David Davis has said he is not certain Britain will secure an EU withdrawal deal. He repeated the Tories’ favourite line, saying that no deal “would be better than a punishment deal.”
Tory former chancellor Ken Clarke said the election outcome would put pressure on Prime Minister Theresa May to compromise on Brexit.
Asked if he had seen the Tories in such a “mess” in the past, pro-Remain Mr Clarke told Sky News: “I’ve seen nothing like this. It’s quite unique.”
