Scientists' union urges Labour to address lack of women

SCIENTISTS’ union Prospect yesterday urged Labour to address the chronic under-representation of women in the profession.

The union welcomed the Labour Party’s green paper on the future of science in Britain — which noted that the gender balance in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) jobs has not changed in 25 years.

“The science base has been hit by cuts to capital and departmental budgets, so a 15-year commitment for investment is welcome,” said Prospect communications and research director Sue Ferns.

She also backed the green paper’s call for more high-quality apprenticeships in Stem roles.

But she called on all parties to back the union’s campaign to raise the proportion of women in the sector from 13 per cent to 30 per cent by 2020.

The “Prospect Pledge” campaign is encouraging union members to send pledge cards to their MPs, encouraging them to sign up to the union’s policy recommendations.
