IRANIAN President Hassan Rouhani condemned rival Saudi Arabia’s “unprecedented” interference in Lebanese affairs yesterday.
Mr Rouhani added his voice to those accusing the kingdom of instigating former Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri’s resignation on Saturday — which he announced in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
Mr Hariri said he had fled there to escape an assassination plot, though Lebanese security forces denied knowledge of such a conspiracy.
On his official website, Mr Rouhani said: “There is no case in history that a country forces another one’s authority to resign only to interfere [in] their internal affairs.
“You are making a mistake if you think Iran is not your friend and the US and Israel are your friends,” he added.
Mr Rouhani told Lebanese President Michel Aoun in a call on Tuesday that his people would overcome “this sedition.”
