RICKY TOMLINSON’S rabble-rousing account of the political stitch-up that led to his imprisonment alongside five of his construction comrades is a highlight of most union conferences.
His tour to rally support for the campaign to get the truth about who put the Shrewsbury Pickets behind bars and why never fails to inspire the crowd.
But Unite’s conference in Mr Tomlinson’s hometown gave him the chance to throw a special homecoming rally on Monday night.
He gave his most heartfelt account yet that was met with both shock and warmth from some 200 trade unionists — including fellow pickets he had not seen in over 20 years.
He clearly believes that his story is as relevant today as it was when he was jailed in 1972.
“Will it be a crime to be a trade union member?” asked Mr Tomlinson. “The way it’s going it will be.”
Despite telling a tale so tough it’s brought builders to tears, delegates left Tomlinson’s Green Room club crying with laughter. That’s the socialist’s star quality.
