PRISON governors are caving in to the demands of inmates who threaten to “shit up” their cells, the justice union POA conference heard yesterday.
Jackie Bates, a prison officer at HMP Buckley Hall, said these dirty protests were being used as a regular threat and that the acquiescence of management was only making things worse. She said inmates were being given tobacco on credit and were then immediately selling their supplies on.
“They say: ‘If you don’t give me a smoker’s pack, I’m going to shit up’,” she said.
Officers were then told to concede and hand out a smoker’s pack — the rations of tobacco and rolling papers given to inmates.
“On my way home, I’m going to Tesco and I’m saying to Mr Tesco, I’ll have a bottle of Bollinger,” she joked. “When he says no, I’ll say ‘I’m going to shit up your wine aisle’, and I’ll bet you a pound to a penny I’m not drinking Bollinger tonight.
