Kenya: 22 killed by al-Shabab

AT LEAST 22 people have been killed in overnight attacks in Kenya, the country’s Red Cross said today.

Beginning on Saturday night attacks were carried out by gunmen in the towns of Hindi, Lamy county, and Gamba in Tana River.

Somalia’s al-Shabab Islamist militants, who are linked to al-Qaida, claimed responsibility for the shootings. In Hindi the 13 dead appeared to be random residents.

Gunmen in Gamba hijacked a lorry, killing its three occupants, and drove it to a police station where an officer and five inmates — thought to have been non-Muslims — were killed while another three inmates escaped with the attackers.

Al-Shabab has threatened vengeance on Kenyans due to the country’s military assistance for the Somalian government against it.

Opposition groups within Kenya plan a mass protest today urging the government to convene emergency talks on issues including security, corruption and the disbanded electoral authority.
