LECTURERS at Leeds University won the backing of one of the city’s Labour MPs Hilary Benn in their battle against imposition of a “sacker’s charter” by management.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) walked out for 48 hours yesterday in protest at draconian changes to the university’s disciplinary procedure which would allow staff to be sacked under a vague new cause of “some other substantial reason.”

The university is in Mr Benn’s Leeds Central constituency.

He has now written to three government ministers about the issue and signed the union’s petition calling for the changes to be scrapped.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: “We are delighted that Hilary Benn has made clear his opposition to the university’s plans and added his name to our petition.

"We hope that his intervention will ensure the university now comes back to work with us to avoid further disruption.”
