TROPICAL conditions are hitting Britain as temperatures soar above 30C in some areas, tempered only marginally by thunderstorms and torrential rain.
Experts have issued two public warnings — one for the heatwave and another for heavy rain, lightning strike, flooding, strong winds and hail.
In a severe weather warning, the Met Office said: “Areas of heavy thundery showers will develop over England and Wales from Friday night before moving northwards into Scotland during Saturday.”
Public Health England (PHE) has warned the heatwave conditions could have a “significant effect on health.” The Department of Health agency said people should consider staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of fluids and wear sun cream that is at least factor 15.
It also reminded people to be aware of children and the elderly, to ensure they are not suffering because of the heat.
The changing weather pattern is being triggered by a “Spanish plume” of unstable air moving into Britain from the south. Despite more lightning and thunderstorms expected, it will remain hot.
