Strike drone protesters occupy Newport Barclays bank over manufacturer investment

Campaigners occupied Barclays in Newport yesterday to demand that the bank dump its shares in Israeli drone manufacturer Elbit Systems.

Protesters chanted “stop arming Israel” and sung “Barclays divest from the arms trade,” as four people superglued themselves to fixtures inside the Newport High Street branch.

The occupation was timed to coincide with the final day of the Nato summit, as Elbit’s drones are used by alliance members — including Britain.

Israel carried out 851 drone strikes during its recent assault in Gaza, with Elbit providing much of the ordnance, the campaigners said.

“Elbit’s drones are used to carry out horrific war crimes in Gaza,” said Michelle Horton, one of the occupiers inside the bank.

“We are here to stand in solidarity with people in Gaza and to persuade Barclays to get rid of their shares in Elbit.”

Campaigners say that Barclays owns almost 60,000 shares in the firm.
