Prospect's Leslie Manasseh elected new TUC president

Prospect’s Leslie Manasseh was elected to be the next TUC president yesterday.

The Civil Service union’s deputy general secretary will take over from Mohammad Taj immediately and serve until next year’s Congress, which meets in Brighton.

A trade union official since the early 1980s, Mr Manasseh is a member of the TUC’s race committee and in 2007 was one of 16 sitting on the TUC’s Commission for Vulnerable Employment, which spent a year taking evidence across Britain.

He said: “Next year’s general election is more important than any other election I can remember.

“Never has it been so crucial for us to ensure politicians understand the huge financial pressures faced by families across the country as they struggle to make ends meet, thanks to falling real wages and rising prices.”

One of the first major events of his presidency will be TUC’s Britain Needs a Pay Rise march and rally in London on October 18, where hundreds of thousands of people are set to attend.
