Nadal eases into Monte Carlo fourth round tie and other sport in brief

Tennis: Eight-Times winner Rafael Nadal eased through the Monte-Carlo Masters third round with a straight-sets win over Teymuraz Gabashvili yesterday.

The 27-year-old world number one claimed a 6-4, 6-1 triumph in an hour and 12 minutes against the Russian qualifier.

The win inched him into 12th place above US player Brian Gottfried on the all-time win list.

Earlier, Roger Federer marked his return to the tournament - his first appearance since 2011 - via a wild card as he saw off Czech Radek Stepanek 6-1 6-2 in just under an hour.

The three-times finalist said he was "a bit surprised how well it went."

Italian Fabio Fognini set up a third-round clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after seeing off Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 in one hour and 44 minutes.

Justice: Comedian Russell Brand has donated cash he got from suing the Sun newspaper to the families of Hillsborough victims.

The star took action against the gutter rag after it claimed he'd cheated on girlfriend Jemima Khan.

He wrote on Twitter: "I got some money suing The S*n who lied about me. I am making a donation to the #JFT96 campaign."

Brand has taken a more political turn of late and will be among those speaking at the People's Assembly's rally against austerity on June 21.

Running: Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram has joined the British Athletics endurance programme, it was announced yesterday.

"It's an exciting time for the British Athletics endurance programme and it's great to be part of it," said Cram, who won the world 1,500 metres title in Helsinki in 1983 and Olympic silver over the same distance the following year in Los Angeles.

Football: Luton boss John Still hailed a "phenomenal" all-round effort yesterday that saw his side return to the football league.

Cambridge's 2-0 win over Kidderminster puts Luton 10 points ahead of the U's at the top of the Skrill Premier with three game to play.
