Police clash with Shi'ite dissidents on streets of Yemeni capital Sana'a

Yemeni troops clashed on Saturday with Shi’ite Houthi rebels in the capital Sana'a who are calling for the government to resign.

Fighting broke out near the state TV building when troops stopped a rebel truck which military officials claimed was loaded with weapons. They said there had been no casualties.

The Shi’ite rebel group, which has been protesting for weeks, is said to be close to signing a deal reached through an international mediator.

According to government officials, the deal includes the appointment of a new prime minister and the restoration of fuel subsidies.

The crisis was sparked by the government’s decision to slash subsidies in late July as part of an austerity plan.

There are still disagreements over details however, as the Houthis insist on signing the deal in their stronghold of Saada city, while the president wants to sign it in the capital.
