Sport in Brief: 18/8/2014

BOXING: Kell Brook is the new IBF welterweight champion after claiming a majority decision over Shawn Porter in Carson, California.

The Sheffield fighter had been waiting 18 months for his title shot after seeing three clashes with Devon Alexander fall through, with Porter taking advantage to defeat Alexander and claim the belt.

Brook won the contest with the judges scoring the fight 114-114, 117-111, 116-112.

CRICKET: England women were defeated by India on Saturday with six wickets to spare.

India were set a score of 181 to beat and resumed the final day on 119-4.

Mithali Raj was the star of the show as she hit 50 not out to secure the victory.

This was the first game for England since they were awarded full-time professional contracts by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

They meet India again in the first of three one-day internationals on Thursday.

FOOTBALL: Roberto Martinez fears he could be without Ross Barkley for up to five months.

The England midfielder damaged the medial ligament in his right knee in training one day before their opening Premier League match against Leicester, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Everton will have to wait to find out the full extent of the damage.

“Ross Barkley is a phenomenal footballer and we’re going to miss him,” said Martinez.

ATHLETICS: Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad made up for the heartache of losing his steeplechase crown earlier in the week by comfortably winning the 1,500-metre race yesterday.

The controversial 29-year-old made headlines across the world on Thursday evening after bizarrely choosing to remove his top as he entered the home straight, sticking it in his mouth and waving to the crowd.
