SYRIA urged the United Nations on Monday to condemn Israel’s vow to never relinquish its occupation of the Golan Heights.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the inflammatory pledge on Sunday — the 70th anniversary of Syria’s liberation from French colonialism — after holding a cabinet meeting in the territory.
Syrian UN delegation charge d’affaires Mounzer Mounzer said on Monday: “Not condemning it would send a wrong message to Israel that the UN turns a blind eye or support its illegal acts.”
He pointed out that Israel’s annexation of the heights was outlawed by security council resolution 497.
Mr Mounzer said: “The blind support of some influential states in this council” let Israel believe it is “insulated from accountability” for its aggressive racial and settlement policies.
Iran also called for the Golan Heights to be returned to Syria yesterday, while Germany’s Foreign Ministry stressed on Monday that Israel’s unilateral claim contravened international law.
