Putin in Cuba for trade talks

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin flew into Havana today for a six-day Latin American tour aimed at boosting trade and ties.

The visit is focusing on developing economic and commercial ties as well as investment in projects including energy, transport and civil aviation.

“Today, co-operation with Latin American states is one of the key and promising lines of Russia’s foreign policy,” said Mr Putin.

“We are grateful to south Americans for supporting our international initiatives, including outer space demilitarisation, strengthening international information security and combating the glorification of nazism,” he added.

Moscow is nearing final ratification of a deal to forgive 90 per cent of Cuba’s Soviet-era debt, totalling more than $35 billion (£20.4bn).

The remaining 10 per cent will be spent by Havana on local investment projects selected with Russian input.

Mr Putin will travel to Argentina today before flying to Brazil for the July 13-16 presidential summit of the BRICS group of nations.
