A MANCHESTER workplace safety campaigner urged train drivers yesterday not to forget that health and safety gains can be made in the face of the Tories’ neoliberal attacks.
Hazards campaign chairwoman Hilda Palmer brought delegates to their feet at rail union Aslef’s conference, as she slammed the politicians that continue to make the British workplace more dangerous.
“Workers in trade unions fought for all the health and safety legislation we have in this country, but the governments of Margaret Thatcher and Dodgy Dave, following a neoliberal business agenda … have all rowed back on the gains we collectively made,” she said.
“Strong laws and strong trade unions are what keeps workers safe at work. Safety reps are the superheroes of the trade union movement. Health and safety reps save lives, protect health, and save the country money.”
