KERMIT THE FROG’S voice actor said he was “devastated” on Thursday after Muppet bosses sacked him from the job he had done for 27 years.
Steve Whitmire, who had provided the nasal tones of the skinny green master of ceremonies since Jim Henson’s death in 1990, published an emotional blog post.
“For me the Muppets are not just a job, or a career, or even a passion. They are a calling, an urgent, undeniable, impossible to resist way of life,” he wrote.
“I would never consider abandoning Kermit or any of the others,” he said. “To do so would be to forsake the assignment entrusted to me by Jim Henson, my friend and mentor, but even more, my hero.”
Mr Whitmire, who joined the Muppets in 1978, said executives gave him notice by phone in October, although it was only announced this week.
“I remain willing to do whatever is required to remedy their concerns,” he said, while not specifying the two reasons they gave for his sacking.
