Chelsea 2 West Brom 2: Steve Clarke ‘flabbergasted’ as dubious penalty preserves Jose Mourinho's unbeaten record

by Amar Azam at Stamford Bridge

Jose Mourinho's unbeaten league record at Stamford Bridge remains intact, but it took a contentious refereeing decision late on from Andre Marriner against West Brom to ensure that Chelsea took a point from this match.

The Portuguese manager has now gone 66 matches, over two spells at the club, undefeated in the league. There cannot have been many matches where that record came as close as this to being broken.

It was hard not to feel for West Brom and their manager Steve Clarke. The ex-Chelsea assistant said that he was left “flabbergasted” by the decision after defender Steven Reid was adjudged to have fouled Chelsea’s Ramires in the penalty box.

Eden Hazard put away the spot kick that was awarded deep in added time at the end of the match to ensure the draw.

Mourinho was praiseworthy of his team. “We put everything into the game to try to score and at least not to lose,” he said.

Chelsea had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when Samuel Eto’o pounced from close range.

West Brom’s Shane Long equalised for his team on 60 minutes before Stephane Sessegnon took advantage of slack defending to put his side ahead eight minutes later.

The visitors appeared to be holding on for the win until the decision four minutes into injury time.

Chelsea play West Ham after the international break. West Brom welcome Aston Villa.
