GUARDS on Southern Rail are to strike for another day to resolve their long-running safety dispute about retaining a second member of staff on the train.

The RMT union said yesterday it had been “forced to take action” as neither Transport Secretary Chris Grayling nor franchise owners Govia Thameslink had “lifted a finger” to sort out the dispute about the safety of the travelling public.

RMT leader Mick Cash said the government had propped up the “failed” operator and “collude[d] with the company to undermine the fundamental principles of safety and access.

“The government is up its eyeballs in the Southern Rail scandal and have given the company a free run at smashing up the safety and access regime out of pure ideology.”

Guards will down whistles on August 1.
