VINCE CABLE has become the first contender to throw his hat into the ring to replace Tim Farron as leader of the Liberal Democrats.
The veteran Lib Dem returned to the Commons as MP for Twickenham in the general election earlier this month, having been one of the highest-profile casualties of the party’s collapse in 2015.
Mr Cable was also a key architect in the sell-off of Royal Mail, and in April he tweeted that he supported the “reasonable proposal on pensions” for its workers who face losing a third of their future pensions due to the change.
Communications Workers Union general secretary Dave Ward responded the MP’s leadership challenge by writing: “Vince, are you taking the p***?
“You were the Tories’ cheerleader on the sale of Royal Mail and described millionaires getting rich on the back of it as ‘froth’.”
