May Day: Wakefield Labour Club holds celebration of miners' strike for Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign

Yorkshire labour club to host activity and discussion day on the miners' strike and defence against Con-Dem austerity in aid of the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign

A Yorkshire labour club known affectionately as the Red Shed will stage May Day activities to raise money for the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign on Saturday May 3.

Wakefield Labour Club will host the day of celebration and discussion to mark May Day and the 30th anniversary of the miners’ strike.

Speakers include leading journalists Paul Routledge of the Daily Mirror and Granville Williams of the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom.

They will look back at the miners’ strike and consider how people can defend themselves against current attacks on pay, conditions and pensions.

In the evening the club will stage a social with bands and a specially written performance by the Red Shed Players.

Red Shed Players member Ken Rowley said: “This event will show that we will laugh and dance in the face of Tory attacks and that the spirit of resistance will not be broken.”

Tickets are available at £5 and £3.
