RIVAL US presidential candidates have seized on Sunday’s massacre at a Florida gay nightclub to promote their agendas.
Republican populist Donald Trump said on Monday that the horrific incident vindicated his call for a ban on Muslim immigrants.
Perpetrator Omar Mateen told police by phone during the massacre that he had pledged allegiance to Islamic State (Isis).
However some witnesses said that he was a regular at the Pulse club who often became drunk and belligerent, suggesting that he was a repressed gay man and that homophobia was his motive.
Wall Street darling Hillary Clinton condemned Mr Trump’s “inflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoric” but called for an intensification of air raids against Isis targets in Iraq and Syria.
She also said individuals on terrorism watch lists should be prohibited from buying guns and called for a ban on assault rifle-type weapons like that used by Mr Mateen.
