RACIAL inequalities in the labour market, education, health and justice will take centre stage at the Scottish TUC black workers’ conference this weekend.

The theme of this year’s annual conference in Falkirk will be “Is Scotland Fairer for Black Workers?” and will also feature debates on how Brexit has affected race relations.

STUC black workers’ committee chair Sofi Taylor said: “This year’s conference comes at a time of great uncertainty for black workers across Scotland.

“The result of the EU referendum has created a lot of insecurity for workers, particularly those coming from EU countries.”

Ms Taylor said it was clear that tensions were rising and warned that divisive speeches made at the Tory Party conference would fuel the fire of hate.

Scottish Equalities Secretary Angela Constance said: “It’s completely unacceptable that ethnic minorities face barriers to education, employment and housing.

“We will continue to work closely with public and third sector organisations to address these inequalities through our race equality framework.”
