Courier UPS suspends Unite reps two days before Acas talks on nine-month dispute

Delivery firm UPS has suspended two union reps just days before they were due to talk part in talks, Unite said yesterday.

The two London drivers were told they face disciplinary procedures just 48 hours before the talks, aimed at resolving workers’ nine-month-long dispute with UPS.

“Enough is enough,” stormed Unite regional officer Onay Kasab, who said the company regularly attacks trade unionists before Acas-mediated talks.

UPS drivers are forced to work overtime and threatened with disciplinary action if they return to depots with undelivered mail.

“You must be able to walk two paces per second,” said Mr Kasab, quoting from company requirements.

UPS workers say that vans are overloaded and many of them have to working several extra hours pay.

Discussions will be held with management on June 30 but Mr Kasab is preparing a vote for strike action after workers overwhelmingly backed a consultative ballot.

“The mandate is there,” he said.
