15 dead as bomb attacks strike marketplaces near Baghdad

But government claims its making progress on the military front

At least 15 people were killed today when bomb attacks struck marketplaces to the west and south of Baghdad.

Five people died in Baghdad's western suburb of Suweib when a bomb went off around noon at a sheep market, while two others perished in another bombing in nearby Radhawniyah.

A bomb blast near an outdoor market in the town of Madain, just south of Baghdad, killed four people and wounded 11 earlier, while a further four fatalities were registered in Youssifiyah, 12 miles south of the capital.

However, government officials announced some progress on the military front after heavy overnight fighting near the strategic oil town of Beiji.

Iraqi security forces backed by Shi'ite volunteers reported pushing into the town, taking control of some of its southern districts.

The town was captured by the Islamic State group in early June but Iraqi forces prevented them from taking over the refinery, Iraq's largest.
