Yorkshire ex-miner awarded for commitment to Cuban revolution and trade unions

Northern trade unionist presented with Armando Mestre diploma and medal — given to non-Cubans only in 'exceptional circumstances'

A northern trade unionist has been presented with a major award for his commitment to Cuba, its trades union movement, and its revolution.

Denis Doody, a former Yorkshire miner and was active in the 1984-5 strike against pit closures, is northern regional secretary of construction union Ucatt.

The former Ucatt national executive committee member is a committed supporter of Cuba Solidarity Campaign and the Containers For Cuba initiative.

He has made more than 60 visits to the country, transporting materials to beat the United States’ illegal blockade.

He works extensively with Cuban trade unions, particularly the National Syndicate of Construction Workers (SNTC).

On a recent visit he was presented with the Armando Mestre diploma and medal for his work with the SNTC. The award is made only after an individual has given at least 25 years of service to Cuba’s trade union movement, and is made to non-Cubans only in “exceptional circumstances.”
