Liverpool 4 Fulham 0: Unstoppable Luis Suarez fires brace to heap misery on Martin Jol

by Dan Smith at Anfield

Effervescent Liverpool heaped more misery on beleaguered Fulham supremo Martin Jol with a scintillating display of attacking verve at Anfield.

Liverpool’s impressive four goal victory did little to reflect their dominance as they spent most of the game ensconced deep in opposition territory.

Were it not for the agile antics of visiting keeper Maarten Stekelenburg the scoreline would have been much more emphatic.

Steven Gerrard bounced back from a disappointing performance against Arsenal last week with three assists as he linked beautifully with Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and the omnipresent Jordan Henderson.

Gerrard set Liverpool on their way with a dangerous free-kick which Fernando Amorebieta deflected into his own net before Martin Skrtel doubled their lead with a thumping header from Gerrard’s pinpoint corner.

Suarez opened his account before half-time following a lovely passing move before sealing his brace in the second period with a cute finish after Gerrard dispossessed Kieran Richardson and played an exquisite through ball.

Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for his inspirational captain. “No-one delivers a ball better than Steven Gerrard,” Rodgers said. “You saw that with the two goals from the free-kick and the corner. He has incredible quality in his delivery.

“Some of our combination play today was outstanding and we looked a really decent side. We’re becoming relentless in these types of games.”

Liverpool may struggle against the Premier League’s elite clubs, but there are few teams more proficient at dispatching the league’s cannon fodder and that bodes well for the Reds’ top four aspirations.
