ENERGY: Tax relief for oil giants announced in yesterday’s Budget means nothing if assaults on workers’ rights continue, unions warned.

Chancellor George Osborne slashed the supplementary charge on North Sea oil and gas companies from 30 to 20 per cent, and introduced a new investment allowance for the region.

He promised £20 million for a package of seismic surveys to counter industry criticisms that the paltry current levels of exploration would see a rapid decline in output in years to come.

Offshore union Unite Scottish secretary Pat Rafferty said tax cuts for bosses “must go hand in hand” with protecting jobs and maintaining workers’ rights.
