Zero-hours contracts 'must be banned' — Ian Lavery

LEFT MP Ian Lavery told GMB conference delegates that zero-hour contracts should be “banned outright” yesterday.

In a rousing speech he contradicted Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Rachel Reeves, who was booed at the conference on Monday when she refused to commit to ending the controversial work agreements.

Labour have pledged to tackle abuses of the system but Ms Reeves said she believed some people, such as students, supported the flexibility of zero-hour contracts.

Mr Lavery made clear this is not his position.

He told the Star: “I think they should be banned outright. I’d just like to know who wants a contract to work zero hours a week? The Labour Party is looking at zero-hour contracts very closely and you’ll see a huge discussion on them in the future.”

The Wansbeck MP and ex-miner also said that rail and utilities should be brought under public control.
