Turkey police storm Grief factory occupation after 60 days amid allegations of beatings

Turkish police mark the 60th day of a sack factory occupation by storming the building, but 30 protesters continue to protest from the roof

Turkish police marked the 60th day of a factory occupation yesterday by storming the building.

They arrested 91 workers in the swoop on the Grief sack factory.

A small group of protesters managed to take to the roof to continue their occupation.

Police immediately subjected the 30 or so rooftop protesters to siege conditions, refusing them food and water.

Around 600 Grief workers occupied the factory two months ago after collective bargaining for humane working conditions, basic social rights, an end to subcontractors and higher wages broke down.

Other workers flocked to the factory in solidarity.

News site Red Flag reported that workers had been beaten in custody.

It also said its journalist on the scene Murat Yildrim had suffered a bloody nose at the hands of the police.
