BANGLADESHI Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed has vowed to prosecute assailants who stabbed to death a gay rights activist and his companion on Monday.
The banned al-Qaida affiliated Ansar-al Islam group claimed responsibility in a Twitter message yesterday for what it called a “blessed attack.”
But Ms Wazed blamed the extremist Jamaat-e-Islami group and its political ally, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, for the brutal killings.
“Everybody knows who are behind these killings,” she told a meeting of her Awami League party.
The victims were identified as US Agency for International Development employee Xulhaz Mannan, who had previously worked as a US embassy protocol officer, and his friend, theatre actor Tanay Majumder.
Mr Mannan, a cousin of former foreign minister Dipu Moni, was also an editor of Bangladesh’s first gay-rights magazine, Roopbaan. Mr Majumder occasionally helped with its publishing.
