Kenny McDowall says boardroom turmoil won’t affect Rangers players

Scottish League One preview

Rangers number two Kenny McDowall insists the players are so used to off-field turmoil now that they will have no problems focusing on football instead this weekend.

The Scottish League One leaders travel to Brechin City on Saturday aiming to end another tumultuous week off the park with a win on it.

The battle for power in the Ibrox boardroom took another twist when chief executive Craig Mather resigned on Wednesday, along with non-executive director Bryan Smart.

Mather’s exit came just two days after former director Paul Murray won a courtroom battle to force the postponement of the club’s annual general meeting, which was set to take place next week, after the board attempted to block a motion for the election of potential new directors.

Despite ongoing issues in the background, McDowall claims it has not been a disruptive week for the players and coaching staff.

He said: “Not at all. We came in and did our usual work. We set up training, the guys report when they are meant to and we get on with it.

“That’s what we do, it’s our jobs to get on with it. This week is no different.

“The guys just want to play football. As soon as we go out there in the morning that’s what they tune into and it’s all forgotten. We’ve heard so much anyway in the last year or so, now we just do our work.

“We can only control what happens on the playing field. Everything else we can’t control so there is no point worrying about anything like that.”

Asked if he understands the supporters’ frustration, McDowall said: “Absolutely, 100 per cent. Our supporters have been absolutely fantastic. That’s what keeps us going, we want to deliver for them and entertain them.”
