Celtic v Barcelona preview: Neil Lennon saddened by Lionel Messi absence

The Hoops manager says he is conflicted over missing Barcelona star, writes Greg Leedham

Most managers would be delighted at the prospect at not having to face Lionel Messi, but Celtic manager Neil Lennon says he is disappointed that his side will not have to deal with the Fifa Ballon d’Or winner on Tuesday night.

A thigh injury means that Messi will not play at Parkhead when Barcelona take on the Hoops in the Champions League.

The Argentinian’s absence raises the prospect of the Hoops repeating last season’s feat when they defeated the Catalan giants 2-1 last November.

Yet Lennon, whose side lost their Champions League opener at AC Milan two weeks ago, said it was a shame that supporters would be unable to enjoy the talents of one of the greatest footballers of all time.

“It is obviously very good news for us because he is the best player in the world,” said Lennon, whose side warmed up for the match with a 5-2 victory over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend.

“However it is tinged with sadness because it is always fantastic to see the great players play here in Glasgow.

“We are looking forward to the game, we welcome Barcelona with open arms and we are hoping it is going to be another great occasion.”

Despite missing Messi, Barcelona come to Glasgow boasting a bevy of star-studded players, with Brazilian youngster Neymar likely to lead the line for the visitors.

Asked whether it was possible to compare Neymar and Messi, Lennon replied: “It is like comparing a dog with a cat. They are two different types, two different players altogether. He (Neymar) is wonderfully gifted, quick, predominantly playing on the left-hand side and he has goals in him.

“He is only young and he has a fantastic future, but it is far too early to make comparisons to Messi.”

Hoops winger James Forrest could return, as could Beram Kayal. However Derk Boerrigter is doubtful and Joe Ledley has been ruled out.
