NASUWT general secretary re-elected unopposed

THE leader of teaching union NASUWT was re-elected for a third term yesterday.

General secretary Chris Keates ran unopposed for the position.

“To be re-elected unopposed is an overwhelming endorsement of Chris’s hard work on behalf of NASUWT members and a tribute to her leadership qualities and negotiating skills,” said the union’s president Geoff Branner.

The re-election is being celebrated during what will be Ms Keates’s tenth year at the helm.

A former humanities teacher in Birmingham, she has worked on making the relationship between NASUWT and the Department for Education a stronger one.

She said: “These are very challenging times for the teaching profession. Now more than ever it is critical that they have a strong union like the NASUWT to champion their cause.”

Ms Keates will now lead NASUWT for the next five years.
