THE Sports Direct warehouse is actually built on the site of the former Shirebrook colliery in Derbyshire.
Its miners walked out in support of the miners’ strike against pit closures in 1984. Most stayed off work but then 15 weeks into the strike some miners started trickling back to work.
The National Coal Board and the right-wing media promoted a nationwide propaganda campaign against the miners, but the vast majority of Shirebrook’s 2,000-plus miners remained solid, with hundreds turning up for daily picketing.
Shirebrook was shut in 1993 as the Tories implemented their final list of closures prior to privatisation of Britain’s deep-coal-mining industry.
