KELVIN MACKENZIE’S “ill-informed” and “malevolent” attack on Channel 4 News presenter Fatima Manji came under fire in the Commons yesterday, writes Cassie Fitzgerald.
More than 1,700 people have complained to the Independent Press Standards Organisation after Sun columnist Mr Mackenzie fumed that a Muslim woman in a headscarf was reporting on the Nice terror attacks.
Shadow equalities minister Angela Rayner demanded the former Sun editor, responsible for the paper’s infamous smears against the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, make a full public apology.
Mr MacKenzie wrote on Monday that he “couldn’t believe his eyes” when he saw Ms Manji on the TV, questioning whether it was “appropriate for her to be on camera” after “yet another slaughter by a Muslim.”
Equalities Minister Justine Greening said the comments were “deeply offensive” and should be treated with “derision.”
Unusually, Speaker John Bercow then added: “That put the bigoted fellow in his place, pretty comprehensively.”
