THE United States sought to defuse a row with Indonesia yesterday by apologising to Jakarta, but Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi was not persuaded.
She said that Indonesia wanted the whole story on why General Gatot Nurmantyo had been prevented from boarding a flight to Washington.
US diplomat Erin McKee offered an apology but did not explain why Gen Nurmantyo had been banned from flying, merely claiming that the matter had been resolved.
“There are absolutely no issues with his ability to travel to the United States. We welcome him. The embassy is working very hard to understand what happened,” she added.
Ms Marsudi said that Indonesia still expected the US to provide a more complete explanation, stressing: “I’ve said that it was not enough. We still need an explanation of why the incident happened.”
The general and his wife had planned to fly on Saturday evening but were told shortly before departure that they would be denied entry on arrival.
