SHIA rebels clashed with government-allied tribesmen in Yemen over the weekend, leaving at least 35 people dead.
A Yemeni security official said yesterday that fighting had erupted around the city of Amran and that 15 soldiers and 20 rebels had died.
The rebels are part of the Hawthi uprising in the north and are fighting the pro-regime Hashid tribal confederation, which is Sunni, claiming that ultraconservative Salafi Muslim preachers have been encroaching on their strongholds.
Several attempts to mediate a ceasefire have so far failed.
The weekend’s fighting saw Hashid fighters backed up by units of the national army. Airforce jets also bombed insurgents attempting to storm a government compound.
Yemen also faces an al-Qaida-linked uprising in the south. Militants believed to be aligned with the international terrorist network attacked an army patrol in Abyan yesterday, killing six troops.
