WHEN you throw rock and folk into a mix spiced with shanty you get Skinny Lister — and what an explosive brew they concoct.

The London sextet, anchored by a rhythm section worth dying for (Thom Mills, drums and Scott Milsom, double bass) produce an invigorating and melodic sound that’s distinct on each song.

Instruments play in layered unison to exhilarating effect — there’s no chest-puffing, narcissistic solos here. Skinny Lister are a collective endeavour.

But it is the stunning vocals, led by Lorna Thomas and Dan Heptinstall and the choral backing which infuse rare sonic class into this rapturous music.

From the rousing Wanted through the haunting melancholy of Reunion or Geordie Lad to the foot stomping, joyous Hamburg Drunk or anthemic Beat it from the Chest, this is life-affirming stuff.

Touring Britain now, don’t miss.
