Golden Dawn leader blames 'Establishment plot' for crackdown on party

THE jailed head of Greece’s fascist Golden Dawn told parliament today that a crackdown on his party was just an Establishment plot.

Nikos Michaloliakos spoke during a debate on lifting his immunity on additional weapons charges, as about 600 party supporters shouted slogans outside.

“I am the head of Greece’s third-largest party,” Mr Michaloliakos said during an aggressive speech in which he told the parliament speaker to “shut up.

“You have drawn up charges with your eyes on opinion polls.”

“You have kept me in prison, unfairly, for eight entire months.”

Golden Dawn MPs repeatedly shouted abuse at other MPs before walking out before the vote.

Mr Michaloliakos and another two of six MPs awaiting trial for running a criminal organisation had arrived earlier in the day from a maximum-security Athens prison.

They deny any wrongdoing and argue that unlicensed firearms found in their homes were for personal protection.
