Gunman appears self-radicalised, says Obama

US President Barack Obama said yesterday that there was no clear evidence that the man who carried out a massacre in Orlando was directed to conduct his attack or was part of a larger plot.

He added that the murderer appeared to have been inspired by extremist information disseminated over the internet.

Mr Obama said that, while the investigation is at the preliminary stages and is being treated as a terrorism case, the attack resembled last year’s shooting spree in San Bernardino, California.

Al-Bayan Radio, which broadcasts for the Islamic State (Isis) extremist group, claimed Orlando gunman Omar Mateen yesterday as “one of the soldiers of the caliphate in America.”

The death cult hailed the attack that left 50 people dead and another 53 wounded, saying that it had targeted a gathering of Christians and gays.

However, the dead killer’s former wife Sitora Yusufiy said that Mr Mateen had been bipolar and given to violence.

“He was mentally unstable and mentally ill,” she said.

Although records show that the couple didn’t divorce until two years after their marriage, Ms Yusufiy explained that she had only remained with her husband for four months because he was so abusive.

He would not let her speak to her family and family members had to come and literally pull her out of his arms.

Ms Yusufiy said that she had been “devastated, shocked, started shaking and crying” when she heard about the shooting, but she attributed the violence to her New York-born husband’s mental illness, rather than any alliance with terrorist groups.

When he made an emergency call from the gay nightclub to police on Sunday morning, he professed allegiance to Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spokesman Trevor Velinor confirmed that Mr Mateen, who perpetrated his slaughter with an AR-15 automatic rifle, had bought at least two firearms legally within the last week or so.

Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted yesterday: “Is President Obama going to finally mention the words radical Islamic terrorism?

“If he doesn’t, he should immediately resign in disgrace!”
