JOHN McDONNELL threw his weight behind the launch of Britain’s first political game jam in London yesterday.

The shadow chancellor joined arts collective Games for the Many at the event on Saturday, calling it a remarkable breakthrough for Labour’s youth engagement.

Around 70 Labour Party and other left-wing activists, video game programmers and enthusiasts took part in the game jam, where participants break up into small teams and have 48 hours to create small video or board games with a political message.

Mr McDonnell told the Star: “It’s not just a matter of people coming along and playing games. It’s a form of communication where people genuinely engage in the political programme.”

“We’ve got 70 people here for a whole weekend developing new games that will set the political agenda for the coming period.”

The project follows the success of Corbyn Run, a game where players take control of the Labour leader as he avoids attacks from the Tories.

Games for the Many co-founder James Moulding said the game, released during the =election, had over 150,000 downloads in its first four days and reached two million people.
