London mayor pushes 'madcap' airport plan despite jobs warning

'Boris Island' scheme to relocate Heathrow could threaten 200,000 local jobs

London's egotistical Tory Mayor Boris Johnson pushed plans yesterday for his “Boris island” airport despite warnings that it could cost thousands of jobs.

Mr Johnson published a report arguing that the best option for increasing London’s “aviation capacity” was for Heathrow to relocate to the Thames estuary from 2030.

He claimed a redevelopment of the current site could support 90,000 jobs and 190,000 homes or be used to create two new university campuses.

But Labour MP John McDonnell, whose Hayes and Harlington constituency contains Heathrow, slammed the plan.

He said: “This madcap scheme threatens 200,00 local jobs.

“While we don’t want another runway we certainly don’t want to put at risk the livelihoods of so many local families.”

The government’s Airports Commission is due to make its final recommendation on airport expansion in summer 2015.
